LEGO® Boats
2 golggotmánnu 2024
As a LEGO® lover, you know that the endless possibilities of the colourful bricks extend beyond just houses and cars. LEGO® has already taken the world by storm with countless sets and themes, but one of the most underrated (and at the same time most exciting) building categories are LEGO® boats. Yes, you read correctly: LEGO® boats! These are no ordinary, stuffy models; these are vessels that combine adventure, creativity and a touch of childlike imagination.
A World of Boats
From pirate ships to modern yachts and even naval vessels, LEGO® has built up an impressive fleet over the years. Consider the iconic 1989 Black Seas Barracuda, an imposing pirate ship that made many a child's heart beat faster at the time. With its black and red sails, guns that actually fired (well, in LEGO terms), and a crew of villainous pirates, this ship was a dream for every young pirate.
But LEGO® boats are more than just playful sets. They are often true masterpieces of engineering ingenuity. Take, for example, the LEGO® 42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 yacht. This vessel is not only pleasing to the eye with its clean lines and aerodynamic shape, but also a challenge to build. With moving parts, use the pneumatic function to pump up the hydrofoil cant arms with this LEGO® Technic version of the hydraulic method used to move the arms on a real racing yacht.
Parts to Dream Of
But what makes a LEGO® boat really special? The parts, of course! Here are some of the most fascinating and essential parts that will make your building adventure on the water unforgettable:
The Hull: The basis of every LEGO® boat starts with the hull. These are often large, specially shaped pieces that form the structure and stability of the boat. Whether it is a narrow speedboat or a wide freighter, the hull determines the shape and sailing characteristics of your LEGO® craft.
Sails and Mast: No ship is complete without its sails. LEGO® offers a range of masts and sails, often made of flexible plastic or fabric, that not only give your ship an authentic look, but also prepare it for adventure on the wild sea.
Rudders and Steering: For the captain in you, LEGO® has developed various steering systems, ranging from simple rudders to complex steering wheels that are actually connected to the rudder. With these, you can (in theory) navigate your boat through the raging waters of your bathtub!
Cannons and Armament: For the more combative boaters, LEGO® has an array of cannons and other weapons, perfect for defending your treasures against hostile pirates or naval vessels. These small but detailed parts make any sea battle spectacular.
Accessories and Details: The magic of LEGO® is in the details. Anchors, lifebuoys, ship clocks, and even small LEGO® figures with captain's caps - these accessories bring your ship to life and make it unique.
The Building Process: A Journey in Itself
Building a LEGO® boat is not just a hobby; it is an adventure. The process starts with opening the box, sniffing the smell of new bricks and flicking through the pages of instructions. Then the challenge begins: assemble the hull, attach the masts, and slowly but surely watch your craft take shape. Each part you snap on brings you closer to the end result: a fully-fledged ship that knows limits only in your imagination.
Are they seaworthy?
LEGO® has created several boats that can actually float. And so then it's fun to test out a homemade ship too. That is what Tyler from the TD BRICKS YouTube channel has done. He made several boats and tested them. You can see the results in the video below.
We thank Tyler for testing the seaworthiness of LEGO boats. Want to see more videos from him with awesome LEGO MOCs and experiments? Then be sure to subscribe to his channel!
Why LEGO® Boats?
LEGO® boats are more than just toys; they provide a creative outlet, a way to tell stories and explore worlds. For children, they are a way to bring fantasy to life, while for adults they offer a nostalgic return to the simplicity of building and playing.
Whether you're a seasoned builder or a newcomer to the world of LEGO®, building a boat is an experience you won't want to miss. So what are you waiting for? It's time to hoist the sails, grab the helm and set sail for the next big LEGO® adventure. And who knows? Maybe you'll discover a hidden talent as a master shipbuilder!
Ahoy, and have fun building!
