LEGO® Tiles
LEGO has many different parts, but along with LEGO bricks and plates, tile is among the basic elements. Generally, a tile has a smooth, i.e. nop-less, top. But LEGO® wouldn't be LEGO if there weren't exceptions. In addition, the standard tile has a height of ⅓ brick. This makes the tile similar in size to a LEGO® Plate. Stack two slabs and a tile together and you have the same height as a brick.
The LEGO tile comes in different sizes ranging from 1x1 to 10x16. The smaller sizes are most commonly used in LEGO® building sets. They are therefore very practical to finish surfaces smoothly. You can also use them to make nice mosaics or create a nice floor pattern in your own Modular Building.
The tile comes not only in all kinds of sizes, but also in many different colors. Meanwhile, there is also a large collection of tiles with a print. With these you can give an extra accent to your building or add a specific attribute to your LEGO® minifigure, for example a telephone or a keyboard for the computer.
Can't find a tile with the print you want? Then take a look at the LEGO stickers. Tiles lend themselves perfectly to being covered with an original LEGO® sticker.
Tiles with and without a groove
Of many tiles there are (still) two versions, one with and one without a groove on the bottom side of the tile. There are no architectural implications to this groove, although you can see the narrow groove. By the way, that can create an extra nice effect. The groove is there mainly for a practical reason: then you can loosen it from other parts more easily with a rocker. If there is an alternative of the LEGO part you were looking for (technically the same, but in a different version) we will show it on the detail page of the item. So please also check the product page for more images and/or more information.
Tiles in different shapes
A tile is not always rectangular, square or triangular. There are also round and semi-circular tiles. Or how about tiles that look like shields, or have slots that make the tile look like a grill or grate.
Tile with studs or hinges
Although a LEGO tile is actually smooth on top, there are exceptions. Slabs that lack studs (also called studs) are usually referred to as custom tile. This can then be a 1x4 tile with two studs, one on each end. This tile is commonly used in the LEGO Modular Building sets to make the floors removable, without being completely separate. A custom 2x2 tile with one stud is another special LEGO piece: a skip part, or sweater, because you can now continue building in the middle of the tile.
Tiles with hinge parts or other protruding parts such as a clip, are of course also available. No longer completely smooth, but still a custom tile.
